Hurricane Ridge Road Bike

This Reference Video section is designed for subjects that will aid seekers of information on various subjects.

NOTE: Version 3 (V3) was filmed on July 1, 2022. I was on my Trek Émonda so speeds are more consistenly over 30 MPH, resulting in a shorter video: SEE BELOW

My stats for August ride: note; speed limit is 35 MPH

Featuring a 4800 foot climb to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park (from the visitor center), this longish crank will reward the rider with the same descent over 17 miles. In this updated version filmed in August 2019, my particular trip started and ended at a hotel in Port Angeles for a 40 mile RT with 5400 feet of climb. I started early on the climb and was able to depart the Hurricane Ridge visitor center (5240’) at 9:30 AM. The rider should consider traffic, especially during the summer. Despite being a weekday, on my descent the uphill traffic was getting thick and there were numerous bike riders on the way up. My early start enabled basically a downhill traffic free experience (I was passed by 3 cars over the entire distance). My previous video was filmed on a September afternoon during the week and was also essentially traffic free. Although there is one flattish section before the entrance kiosk, the rider can expect to maintain speed the entire distance, with the steepest grade the first 5 miles ascending from the ONP visitor center to the entrance kiosk. Filmed with a shoulder mounted GoPro Hero 7 Black in 2.7K. This is one long hill and a Washington bike classic climb; enjoy!

Filmed on a sunny and warm August morning, I left my hotel in Port Angeles and started this climb early to avoid heavy traffic, starting the descent at 9:30 AM. My iteration involved 40 miles with 5,400' of climb/descent, starting and ending at the hotel in Port Angeles. This is arguably one of the best climbs and bike descents in Washington State, where one can snake down this smooth road doing the speed limit (35 MPH). The steepest grade is actually the 5 miles from the road beginning to the entrance kiosk for Olympic National Park.

This is version 3 (V3). The first was filmed on my mountain bike in 2015, and later replaced by the 2019 version (V2) filmed using my Salsa Cutthroat Rival. This outing was with 4 friends and I was atop my new Trek Émonda. This faster bike meant I could pedal up to almost 40 MPH so the speeds stay closer to the speed limit of 35 MPH. I also used a GoPro Hero 9 with the Max lens mod, resulting in the best video quality and stabilization of all the versions. It is also shorter at 26 minutes, but I ended the video at the park entrance kiosk.
